St John of God Berwick Hospital: Casey Business Awards 2026 - Best Eco-Friendly Business Finalist

Located in Berwick, St John of God Berwick Hospital is a leading private healthcare provider serving the growing south-east community. Since opening in 2018, the 202-bed hospital has delivered a comprehensive range of services including maternity, cancer care, intensive care, day surgery, cardiac care, rehabilitation, and medical and surgical services. St John’s is committed to tackling environmental sustainability in a highly complex healthcare setting. Recognising the challenge of reducing environmental impacts while maintaining the highest standards of patient safety, the hospital established a Sustainability Committee made up of clinical and non-clinical staff, alongside City of Casey representatives. This collaborative approach has driven meaningful environmental improvements across the organisation while fostering a culture of shared responsibility.  

A finalist in the Best Eco-Friendly Business category, St John of God Berwick Hospital has inserted sustainability into its day-to-day operations through a range of innovative initiatives. These include sustainable procurement practices, banning single-use plastics and the anaesthetic Desflurane - a gas known for its high environmental impact.  They have also introduced food waste diversion programs, expanded recycling streams, installed solar panels and electric vehicle charging stations, and regularly conduct ongoing waste audits to measure progress.  

The hospital’s environmental strategy is guided by its broader 2026-2030 sustainability roadmap, which focuses on governance, resource stewardship, energy efficiency and continuous improvement.  

Beyond its environmental achievements, the hospital is deeply connected to the Casey community. Around 70 per cent of its workforce lives locally, and the organisation actively partners with local Aboriginal groups, community representatives and Council to improve inclusion, accessibility and environmental outcomes.
